When I thought it came from cards, it made sense to me. Well some kind of sense, anyway. When you're playing cards, you have to appreciate that a spade, the king of all suites, is, well a spade, and nobody can deny the holder at least that. But along with its mystic origin, I also noted, after reading the true context rather dispassionately, that I would have to call a spade a spade
